Do you remember when we announced that Specialist Glass Products had produced curved glass signage for the Crossrail’s new London railway, the Elizabeth line?
Well, three years later and Transport for London (TfL) has officially opened the Crossrail project and we are incredibly proud to have been a part of it. It looks amazing! Even the Queen made a surprise visit to Paddington Station to see the completed project and unveiled a plaque stating she had “officially opened” the Elizabeth line.
Back in 2019, we were commissioned by main contractors Wood and Wood, A J Wells and Merson-ASG to produce and supply in excess of 2,000 glass panels to be used in station signage throughout the line. The straight and curved glass signs were produced to exacting standards and dimensions in our state-of-the-art glass manufacturing factory in Huddersfield.
Using Pilkington Optiwhite low-iron glass, the panels were bent, toughened and laminated, incorporating the printed design required for each station.
The signs will provide a navigation aid for passengers, form a consistent identity across the line’s stations, and continue to feature the instantly recognisable ’roundel’ – which has been in use on the London Underground for over 110 years.
Our Managing Director, Andrew Taylor commented on the announcement: “We were incredibly delighted to play our part in such a prestigious and ambitious project.
“As part of the tendering process, we were asked to provide glass samples, which were subjected to extensive smoke and blast testing, and it’s a testament to our capabilities and expertise that we came through with flying colours and were awarded the contract.”
No job is too big or small for the SGP team. Our curved glass is available in three forms, annealed, toughened and laminated, and we can curve glass up to 3200mm x 5000mm!
