At Specialist Glass Products, we’re always looking for new ways to improve our team’s efficiency when creating our bespoke and jumbo glass. With this in mind, we have invested £1.2 million in a new glass processing machine. This comes after receiving £840,000 in funding from Lombard.

Our new glass processing machine will set SGP apart from the competition, as it is the first Jumbo-sized one of its kind in the UK! With this new technology, we will strive to continue to offer excellent finishes and bespoke designs, while offering competitive lead times for our customers.

Find out more about the benefits of our new glass processing machine below!

What types of glass can we process with this new machine?

In our state-of-the-art Huddersfield glass processing factory, our new Systron proHD Vertical Glass Processing machine will allow us to handle more jumbo glass orders up to 6000mm x 3210mm. We will also continue to process flat glass and curved glass orders to bespoke measurements.

The new machine is multi-functional; it not only polishes and grinds glass but can also make cutouts and holes and shape the glass to virtually any shape.  It also allows for the production of 120 fully finished panels daily. This means we can continue to work with detailed bespoke designs, particularly those projects that require identical units of the same shape and size.

How will the new glass processing machine benefit productivity?

The machine will help us streamline processes with automated services, so we can produce high-quality and complex units even on tight deadlines. In particular, we can more quickly produce excellent edge finishes every time, which benefits our customers as we can offer competitive lead times, without compromising on quality or value.

In addition, unlike traditional horizontal CNCs, it has no setup required for each individual glass piece, so several units can be loaded ready to be processed. In addition, once each unit is completed, it automatically moves on a conveyor to be washed. Then, it will move faster to the next stage such as laminating or double-glazing.

Some of the machine’s standout features, which will enhance our high-quality production include:

  • Constant polishing quality as the machine precisely controls the polishing pressure,
  • Arris parallelism guaranteed by patented water-cushion guidance
  • Vibration-free processing which prevents chipping,
  • Continuously protected suction cups to prevent damages.

How does the new machine align with SGP’s vision for the future?

This new processing machine is a cornerstone of SGP’s broader strategic investment plan, demonstrating our commitment to pushing the boundaries of glass processing. The installation of the new machine is expected to enable us to drive turnover to £15m within two years, with sales growing by at least 10% per annum.

By enabling efficient production of virtually any shape, size, and glass type (including advanced coatings like Low E and solar control) this machine not only enhances our capacity but also positions us to lead in delivering cutting-edge solutions to meet evolving market demands. It’s an exciting step forward in our mission to innovate, diversify, and grow sustainably.
