The Project

Leaders in bespoke glass and mirror design and installation, Glass & Mirror Solutions, approached us to supply 1800mm high glass balustrade screens to the sides of a new balcony project to conform to the building regulations for viewing onto the next-door neighbour.

To increase outdoor living space, this residential property in Tynemouth wanted to install a balcony with beautiful views and provide the onlooking room with a touch of the outdoors.

What did we supply?

We supplied two 21.5mm Toughened Laminated panels to ensure longevity and security for this project. For aesthetic purposes, we designed these with a white diffuser, and the overall flat glass panels measured 900mm x 1800mm.

We worked to exact standards to ensure that the glass was large enough met the planning permission requirements, but also to ensure that we did not provide too large a panel to obtrude in the space.

We processed these in our Huddersfield factory and delivered these to the customer in Tynemouth, in line with their own schedule.

The Outcomes

As the customer was incorporating a new balcony to the side of their property, they needed to consider planning permission which takes the importance of overlooking, overshadowing, safety, a lack of precedence and whether the property is in a Conservation Area or is a Grade I or II Listed Building into consideration.

Thanks to our tall Toughened Laminated white diffuser glass balustrades, you can ensure privacy and safety whilst creating an attractive open-space illusion.

Although the panels are made from glass, they are not transparent, ensuring privacy to the home owner’s neighbours. This is a key consideration when building a high-value property, attracting potential buyers who will want to use the balcony without privacy concerns.

In addition, the Toughened Laminated glass feature ensures that the panels are strong, tough and durable, fulfilling the safety element required on a domestic project. As the balcony is likely to be used a lot, especially in summer months, the user can have piece of mind that the glass will be secure for years to come.

“Specialist Glass Products balustrades were the ideal solution to create a bright open space while staying in line with the building regulations and planning requirements. This isn’t the first time we have worked with the SGP team, and we expect to continue building a strong relationship whilst working on more projects in the future, both big and small.”
