We were appointed by Design Fabrications Ltd to supply bespoke reeded glass for a glass staircase project for a private home in Suffolk.
Design Fabrications chose Specialist Glass products to support them with this project due to the bespoke size and nature of the glass required. In particular, the client needed an intricate design that could be laminated for additional strength and durability, so it came to us thanks to our experience in bespoke glass products and specialist requirements.
What did we supply?
We processed and supplied the glass to bespoke measurements: 4mm reeded glass with a 1.5mm interlayer. The laminated glass was developed by adding a specialised interlayer between two reeded glass units to bond the layers securely and add additional safety benefits.
Using our Tema laminating oven, we bonded each layer with heat and pressure, and our CNC cutting line ensured each unit was cut and shaped to a consistent size. We then delivered the glass ahead of planned timescales, achieving a shorter lead time than the client had initially hoped.
What were the benefits?
By laminating the reeded glass units, we enhanced its strength and safety while maintaining its ribbed texture and sheer appearance. As the staircase is one of the most high-traffic areas of the home, our glass gives peace of mind to those living in the house, as laminated glass is designed not to break into large shards.
The glass was chosen according to the client’s and architect’s designs to complement the bespoke European Oak treads and handrail. The laminated units formed the main body of the external staircase, whereas multiple reeded units were used to create a balcony on the level above for a seamless design throughout the home.
By incorporating the glass units into a glass staircase and glass balcony, the home has a more open, bright and airy feel, which is well suited to the existing contemporary design.
